ASTM E837-01 (“Standard Test Method for Determining Residual Stresses by the Hole-Drilling Strain-Gage Method”) is the only standard on residual stresses available in the world.
This test method specifies a hole-drilling procedure for determining residual stress profiles near the surface of an isotropic linearly elastic material; the stresses may remain approximately constant with depth (case of “uniform” stress distribution) or they may vary significantly with depth (case of “non-uniform” stress distribution).
With the strength of many years of experience in the fields of strain gauge measurements and in programming and mechanical design engineering, SINT Technology has developed and patented a system for measuring residual stress (RESTAN – MTS3000, mettere link) that is unique in his kind because of its fully automated process.
The RESTAN (REsidual STress ANalyzer) system, which is internationally marked by HBM, is able to perform residual stress tests using hole drilling method, and to process the acquired data by four stress calculation systems as listed below:
Standard ASTM E837-08, uniform stress distribution
Standard ASTM E837-08, non-uniform stress distribution
Integral method, in accordance with G.S. Schajer.
As written above, the ASTM E837 standard is the only standard concerning residual stress measurement. Despite that, the other calculation methods cover all possible test conditions and, together with the ASTM E837 standard, perform an excellent data calculation support.
